The beautiful Castle of Oron....

.....can be seen from miles around.

Built in the 1200's....

....owned initally by the Lords of Oron.  Later the Counts of Gruyere and after they went bankrupt,a private family purchased it in 1555.  In 1798 it was used by the government for a military prison. In the 19 Century two rich families used the Castle of Oron as their home.  The later, The Gaiffes, lived there from 1870 to 1936 before it was purchased by a preservation society, who own ittoday. The Gaiffes family purchased about 20,000 books and they are stored in the Castle
library today.  It contains many French Romantic novels of the 18th Century.

The walls of the Castle....

....these afforded lots of protection.

The Castle tower....

....pretty impressive.

A water fountain....

....in the courtyard.

In the foyer of the Castle...

.....a typical animal of the day.

The Castle kitchen...

.....it also had a hugh fireplace.

One of the Castle's bedrooms...

.....with a heater on the right.

The hunting room....

.....hunting scenes all around the room.

A view out the window....

....and a look down below.

Another view out the window....

....you can see for miles and it's all beautiful.

The day we were there, a wedding was planned....

This was done in the year 1757.....

....If you can magnify this, do so and look at the intricate design this person
made over 250 years ago, with some sort of ink pen.  No smuges or mistakes.
It was in the front of a book that I numbered this week.
